Virtualcoach, how to get the statemachine state?

Hi guys,
what is the proper way to get the state machine state from the virtual coach?
we would like to get a message from the state machine “the state” from the virtual coach.

in the past we had the state machine publish to a topic, and then a subscriber to listen to it, but this was not with the virtual coach. would this work too?
